CALF 17th Annual Fishing Competition: Buckenderra Holiday Village – Lake Eucumbene 17th – 19th Oct. 2008.

Fishing Report:

Cobbitty Aids Leukaemia Fund’s 17th Annual trout fishing competition was held 17th to 19th October at Buckenderra, Lake Eucumbene.  The event was held over three days from Friday to Sunday, with the dinner and auction held on the Saturday night.

Some 59 people entered the competition with several there for the social aspect rather than serious fishing, never the less 35 anglers weighed in fish with 83 rainbow trout and 6 brown trout caught averaging 630grams clean weight.

The largest Rainbow Trout caught was 1025 grams cleaned caught by Steve Bucher.

Largest Brown trout weighted 1729 grams cleaned caught by Justin Eagles.

The winner is judged on the best five fish for each angler, with 10 fish allowed to be weighed in over the three days per angler. This year’s competition winner was Justin Eagles with five fish weighed in at 4545 grams.

This is the first time Justin has entered this competition which is an exceptional effort. Not only did he win the competition but he also caught the largest fish, a brown trout weighing 1729 grams cleaned.

Justin and his mates caught most of their fish trolling further up the lake.  Just over half the fish were caught by trolling and the rest on bait using Berkley Power bait or worms.

Junior winner was Christopher Sandrone with five fish weighed in at 2087 grams which was ninth place over all.

This year’s event raised just under $5000 for R.P.A Haematology Unit, Sydney for research and patient care.

The event is held every October at Buckenderra Holiday Village. The generosity from the fishing and boating industry is overwhelming.

Diplomatic Fishing Tournament Committee

MEDIA RELEASE

A FISHY TALE ABOUT DIPLOMATS

The eighteenth Diplomatic Fishing Tournament took place during the weekend 17-19 November 2006 at Buckenderra Holiday Village on Lake Eucumbene.

Ten diplomatic missions involving around 70 participants took part in this keenly contested tournament and social weekend. Overall fishing was good, with 43 anglers being successful and 84 fish weighed-in with an average weight of 561 grams (since only the heaviest fish caught counts, not all fish were weighed-in). Trolling and bait were equally as successful this year, together accounting for all but 3 fish which were caught on fly.

In a near clean sweep by the Delegation of the European Commission, its team comprising of John Tuckwell, Roger Camilleri and Ken Hood, won the all important team event for the first time, with their heaviest three fish weighing in at 2.8 kg. They nudged the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran into second place by the narrowest of margins (by just 3 gms!), with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in third place.

John Tuckwell won the Individual Grand Open Competition with a lovely 1.6kg brown trout caught on lemon twist Powerbait at Picnic Point at Buckenderra and also the fly fishing trophy with a 0.7kg rainbow trout caught on a brown beetle at Eucumbene Dam.

The Individual Adults Division was taken out by Darren Peterson, also fishing for the European Commission, with a 1.6kg brown trout caught trolling with Tassie Devil (orange with yellow dots) at Brookwood Bay. Again underlining just how close the competition was, Darren's fish was a mere 7gms lighter than the Grand Open winning weight.

The Juniors Division (under 15 years old) was won by a very excited Jacob Kingma fishing for the Embassy of the United States of America with a nice 1.1kg brown trout caught on bait at Picnic Point, Buckenderra.

Bait fishing has been the best I've seen in three years of being here especially off the bank. The fish are coming into the shallows along the grassy banks. The bait fishermen have had some pretty good catches of late with some nice rainbows being caught off the bank.

The best bait seem to be bardy grubs and Power Bait (in floro orange). It is probably better to keep the bait off the bottom so that the cruising fish will see it a little better. Another location to keep in mind are the yabbie beds which are located on the flats and the darker soil. Buckenderra has a large frontage to the lake for guest and visitors to find there own private piece of fishing space.

Caught this one on Saturday, the ugly one is Bob.
Cheers

Caught this one this morning out of middling bank. We thought it was a log.
Great weekend.

Fly Fishing in warmer weather should make the fish a little more active and an increase insect activity will have them near the surface shorlty. Around the darker soil and the yabbie beds is more than worthy of a look also.

On the lake we should see the fish coming to the edges and especially where there are weedbeds and structure. This is great for the fly guys who should experience some good fishing if they take a little time and care. Fish should spend a little time close to the small creeks and inlets to the lake. Again I cannot emphasise the importance of staying low and treading lightly around the foreshores.

The standard patterns should work pretty well for most fly guys. Beadhead Woolly Buggers with some flash in the tail as well as Brown and Black Woollies with some flash could prove a good choice. Again at this time of the season the old flouro orange patterns are probably worth the best shot.

The trollers seem to be picking up a number of good fish of late. Most using a variety of Tassie Devil and numerous colours. The most common have some pink, flouro orange black and red in them. Small Rapalas could even be worth a shot. Most fish that have been caught are in the 15 to 20 foot mark in the deeper water, but it is worth a shot close in to the bank especially over the yabbie banks that are all around the shores near us.

With the best access to Eucumbene here at Buckenderra we are starting to see boaties.
